Zero-Turn Pulls to One Side?

Two control levers do not guarantee two equal drive outputs. The faster side may be over-travelling, or the slower side may be losing tire circumference, belt input, linkage travel or hydrostatic performance.

A real complaint from a TimeCutter

A Toro TimeCutter 50 brought up a familiar complaint: the left drive travelled faster than the right. The symptom is clear, but it does not identify whether the left side is over-commanded or the right side is under-performing.

Before touching a tracking stop, note whether the machine drifts only at full forward, at every speed, under load, when hot, or in both forward and reverse.

Tires are part of the gear ratio

A zero-turn travels according to tire circumference. Equal numbers on the sidewalls do not help if pressure, wear or construction makes one loaded tire effectively smaller.

  • Set both drive tires to the manufacturer's pressure specification
  • Confirm matching tire size and similar tread wear
  • Check for a tire that is slipping on the rim
  • Measure loaded circumference when the difference is stubborn

Compare the controls, not just the handles

The handles can look even while the control arms below them are not reaching equal positions.

  • Lever neutral position and full-forward travel
  • Linkage bends, looseness and incorrect adjustment
  • Transmission control-arm travel side to side
  • Return-to-neutral action
  • Bypass or tow valve fully returned to operating position
  • Any contact that stops one lever early

Make sure both hydros receive equal input

Many zero-turns use one belt to drive both hydrostatic units. A glazed belt, weak tensioner, debris, pulley problem or oil contamination can reduce input — sometimes more noticeably on one side.

Inspect cooling fans and keep the hydro areas clear. Heat can turn a small weakness into a strong pull after the mower has worked for a while.

Tracking adjustment versus weak transmission

A tracking adjustment limits or balances commanded speed when both drive systems are otherwise healthy. It should not be used to hide delayed engagement, growling, loss of pull uphill or a side that fades hot.

  • Pulls equally cold and hot with strong drive: adjustment or control travel is plausible
  • One side weakens with heat: belt input, cooling or internal hydro condition moves up the list
  • Jerks or will not find neutral: linkage and internal control need inspection
  • Different forward and reverse behaviour: compare full control travel and transmission response

Follow the exact adjustment and safety procedure for the mower model. Small changes can affect neutral return and control balance.

Do not test near people or slopes

A machine that tracks unpredictably needs a clear, level test area. Keep bystanders away, wear the seat belt when the ROPS is raised and never defeat the operator-presence system to observe moving parts.

Equalize the tires, control travel and drive input before adjusting tracking. A weak right side and an over-fast left side can feel identical from the seat.

Work safely.
